Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Romans 13:11-12 ESV

The American experiment has failed. The American dream has become a nightmare. Money and greed has become the American idol. God has been pushed to the margins of American society.

The Constitution is a wonderful man-made document, but it doesn’t fully take into account man’s sinful nature, his evil inclination, his fallenness, his stubbornness and his rebelliousness against God’s righteous decrees. It is more about individual rights and freedoms, pursuing individual happiness, and not about godliness and doing what’s in the best interest of the kingdom.

Our government of the people, by the people and for the people has become government of the special interest group, by the special interest group and for the special interest group.

America was doomed from the outset because it was never intended to be some kind of Christian utopia, a melting pot of ethnicities living in peace and harmony with liberty and justice for all as one nation under God. The United States is not the Church or the Kingdom of God, even though God has used the religious freedom afforded the Church in America and continues to use it for His purposes, to spread the gospel throughout the nation and around the world, to bring many sons and daughters into His kingdom and to show us that no matter how good life might be in America there’s still sin and death and pain and sorrow.

America’s only predictable outcome as a nation was failure.

That shouldn’t surprise us. History is littered with great nations/kingdoms/empires/dynasties that rose and fell. Whatever happened to the Egyptian, Babylonian, Assyrian and Persian empires of antiquity? What happened to the Kingdom of Israel, the Roman Empire, the Russian Empire, the British Empire, the Ming Dynasty? Why do we think America is any different?

The nations are nothing to God.

Who has measured out the waters in the hollow of his hand, or carefully measured the sky, or carefully weighed the soil of the earth, or weighed the mountains in a balance, or the hills on scales? Who comprehends the mind of the Lord, or gives him instruction as his counselor? From whom does he receive directions? Who teaches him the correct way to do things, or imparts knowledge to him, or instructs him in skillful design?

Look, the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales. He lifts the coastlands as if they were dust. Not even Lebanon could supply enough firewood for a sacrifice; its wild animals would not provide enough burnt offerings.

All the nations are insignificant before him; they are regarded as absolutely nothing. Isaiah 40:12-17 NET Bible

God allows all nations to go their own way, even though he lovingly cares about them.

“… We are proclaiming the good news to you, so that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to go their own ways, yet he did not leave himself without a witness by doing good, by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying you with food and your hearts with joy.” Acts 14:15(b)-17 NET Bible

So what do we, as followers of Christ, do? Do we just throw up our hands and wait for the collapse, the end to come, and for Jesus to return? No!

We go about being servants, doing blessed deeds, …

For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them. Ephesians 2:10 NET Bible

… being His witnesses, …

He told them, “You are not permitted to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth.” Acts 1:7-8 NET Bible

… being missionaries, going out and making disciples, …

So the eleven disciples went to Galilee to the mountain Jesus had designated. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. Then Jesus came up and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20 NET Bible

… being endurance runners, …

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2 NET Bible

… and being people on bended knees, praying.

First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanks be offered on behalf of all people, even for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. Such prayer for all is good and welcomed before God our Savior, since he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 NET Bible

If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.
— Charles H. Spurgeon

We tell those who are by nature children of wrath, who are without hope, who are without Christ and who are without God in the world about our living hope.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you, who by God’s power are protected through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5 NET Bible

We do all this in the face of fierce opposition, while recognizing that America is not our eternal home and was never meant to be.

For we who are alive are constantly being handed over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our mortal body. As a result, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. But since we have the same spirit of faith as that shown in what has been written, “I believed; therefore I spoke,” we also believe, therefore we also speak. We do so because we know that the one who raised up Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus and will bring us with you into his presence. For all these things are for your sake, so that the grace that is including more and more people may cause thanksgiving to increase to the glory of God. Therefore we do not despair, but even if our physical body is wearing away, our inner person is being renewed day by day. For our momentary, light suffering is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison because we are not looking at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen. For what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:11-18 NET Bible

Prayer: Father God, you called us to be salt and light in the world, so let us be just that in these dark days, exposing the deeds of darkness, living wisely and taking advantage of every opportunity to make you known. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
